Jesus, the Door of the Sheep

We all encounter doors on a daily basis. They help to separate one area from another. Jesus said, in John chapter 10, that he is the door, or gate, of the sheep. What does that mean? Why must we enter into eternal life through the door that is Jesus Christ?
